This is a selection of works by Cuban pianists who revolutionized music and left their mark on future generations. The works of Manuel Saumell, Ignacio Cervantes, Ernesto Lecuona, Dámaso Pérez Prado, Bebo Valdés, Rubén González, José Maria Vitier, Aldo López-Gavilán, and the great Chucho Valdés are part of Cuba’s musical heritage. Blending European piano styles with African rhythms, these compositions achieve the pinnacle of Cuban musical expression, using the piano as a percussion instrument where the left hand mimics the sound of a drum.
